Summer 2010 Tutorials and Teacher Training

How Tutorials Are Conducted

Online tutorials are live audio and chat sessions that meet once a week during the school year. The students and online tutor log in to a virtual classroom using web conferencing at the appointed time and then are able to communicate via audio, chatboxes, and whiteboards. Current lessons and assignments are discussed and the work for the next week is previewed.

In addition, students may be provided with recorded instruction which they can access during the week in the form of video, audio, and/or powerpoint presentations.

Students will complete all assignments at home. Answer keys to exercises as well as editing and evaluation checklists for all writing projects are provided either by the Classical Writing materials or by the tutor. The home educating parent is encouraged to sit in on the tutorial whenever possible.

Each class has its own Class Forum where students post selected assignments. The tutor will monitor each Class Forum regularly in order to assess class progress and needs, and to give general feedback to the students. If it is evident that a student needs assistance, the student and parent will receive an email offer of assistance. In addition, students and parents also can post on the Class Forum and ask for specific help with assignments if they need it. Students are also encouraged to read other students’ work posted on the Class Forum.  There will also be opportunity for the upper level students to provide feedback to one another, under the supervision of the tutor.

The home educating parent will be responsible for evaluation and grading. Classical Writing provides very specific and exhaustive editing checklists which should enable parents to more easily evaluate their students' progress.

For students and parents who prefer specific evaluation and/or grading of writing projects, each student can submit up to eight writing projects via email for the year. There will be an additional fee of $15 per evaluation for this service. See Fees and Registration for more details.

Both PC and Mac users are able to participate, but a highspeed connection is strongly recommended (DSL, cable, wireless, satellite, etc.). All assignments and schedules provided by the tutor are subject to our copyright policy. They should not be shared outside of the registered families, either printed for distribution or posted on the internet in any form.
